1. Highlights of GCMRC activities:
Grand Canyon Monitoring by Students: Twenty high school students from all over the Southwest will be collecting data on the Colorado River for the USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Station (GCMRC) this week. Their expedition was launched August 5. On July 31 at the Willow Bend Educational Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, Kristen Brown of GCMRC introduced the volunteers to the tools and techniques they will be using. Glen Canyon Lessons for Taiwan: The Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center in Flagstaff, AZ hosted 20 Taiwanese representatives of Feng Chia University, the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, and private companies on August 13. The delegation was particularly interested in learning about how GIS and remote sensing assist with studies of Glen Canyon dam operation. Taiwan has 72 dams, and sedimentation is a major problem that requires constant monitoring. Southwest Biological Science Center Review: The Office of the Western Regional Biologist sent a 10-member team to conduct a 5-year program review at the Southwest Biological Science Center in Flagstaff, AZ. The August 17-19 review covered scientific work conducted by four research stations: Canyonlands (Moab, UT), Colorado Plateau (Flagstaff), Sonoran Desert (Tucson), and the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (Flagstaff). 2. GCMRC in the news:
Dams and Drought: Center Director Denny Fenn was interviewed by reporter Laurel Drooley of KNAU, the Flagstaff, AZ NPR station, on August 6. Fenn addressed the effects of drought on research associated with the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program for a KNAU feature story.
