In June and July of 1983, the spillway structures were employed to lower the rapidly increasing lake resulting from late but high spring inflows. The spillways are located at the surface of the lake, in the warm epilimnion waters. It can be seen quite distinctly that the spillway releases substantially increased release temperatures, and considering the large volume of releases (up to 90,000 cfs), little in-stream warming resulted. The second peak of warmer temperatures resulted from the unusually thick, warm epilimnion that resulted from the El Nino Floods.
